Described by the Victorians as the Windsor of the North, Alnwick
Castle is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland, whose family,
the Percys, have lived there since 1309. The Castle has survived
many battles, but now peacefully dominates the picturesque market
town of Alnwick.
The stern, medieval exterior belies the treasure house within,
furnished in palatial Renaissance style, with paintings by Titian,
Van Dyke and Canaletto, fine furniture and an exquisite collection
of china.
The Regimental Museum of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers is
housed in the Abbott's Tower of the Castle. This includes story
panels, artefacts, models, a video presentations, and an interactive
computer. It traces the history of the Regiment from 1684 to the
present day. The Postern Tower also contains a collection of early
British and Roman relics.
Other attractions include the Percy state coach, the dungeon,
the gun terrace and the grounds. Peaceful walks are available
which offer superb views over the surrounding countryside.
